EMTI reaffirms its constant presence in all areas of interest to people
Elite Management Training Institute (EMTI), the Abu Dhabi based leading educational institution in the provision of quality and distinguished training, has recently attended a lecture themed “Dialogue of Civilizations and International Relations” which was organized by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research at Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Hall at the headquarters of the Center located in Abu Dhabi on the 26th of August 2015.
The dialogue of civilizations today is in the heart of the problem of international relations for the following reasons: first, after the end of the Cold War the question of Western dominance and the search for a just international order emerged; second, no civilization today is Eastern or Western—we need to talk, collaborate and cooperate to inspire a new common civilization; and third, ignorance is at the root of the problem— therefore, connections need to be made for peaceful coexistence. There will be no international peace without lasting relationships, justice and a focus on law and equality.
The dialogue of civilizations contributes to the prevention and resolution of conflicts, wars and crises. Credibility stems from self-criticism and a sense of responsibility to both understand the other and explain our own ambitions, especially in defending the rights of Muslims in the face of illegitimate and illegal attacks and interventions. By opening up, exercising due care, and making a contribution to overcoming the contradictions and weaknesses of Islamic societies, we may help to solve problems. The challenge lies in the need to achieve integration and harmony between the fixed and the variable, between unity and human pluralism, as well as in the necessity of innovation and the importance of avoiding self-isolation.
Hence emerged the Institute’s necessity to participate in this lecture to learn more about this issue and benefit the most from the thinking of Mr. Mustapha Cherif, Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, is an internationally renowned Algerian scholar. Prof. Cherif is a widely respected expert in intercultural and interfaith dialogue (especially between the West and the Islamic World) and the coexistence among nations. He is a university professor at several universities and has previously served as the Algerian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Algerian Ambassador to Egypt and as a permanent delegate to the Arab League.
Prof. Cherif is Head of the Master’s Degree Program at the Islamic Civilization at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Spain. He is a Co-Founder and Member of the Catholic–Muslim Forum and has authored fourteen books and hundreds of scholarly articles that seek to consolidate ties among nations in order to produce a new, forward looking civilization.
Prof. Cherif received the UNESCO–Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture in 2013, in recognition of his work on Arab culture and intercultural dialogue. He was also awarded the Italian Ducci Foundation Peace Prize in 2013. 2
